HAVE YOU GOT WHAT IT TAKES TO SUCCEED IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS?

A panel discussion around how to make it happen in music by adopting an entrepreneurial mind-set, can-do attitude and a ‘do-it-yourself’ approach to making great music and/ or getting it out there. Hosted by Lancaster music entrepreneur, Simon Harrison of Mushroom Concepts, the event will explore what it takes to respond to and survive in one of the fastest-changing industries. Provisional panel guests include:

Gary McClarnan: Founder of Sparkle Street, a Manchester-based artist management company which represents Mr Scruff and Alice Russell.  Gary is the Vice-President of the UK Music Managers Forum and since managing DJ Sash in the 1990s has established a diverse range of enterprises from fan-base and tour management systems through to tea and cakes.

Rich Huxley and Ed Waring: Founder members of Hope & Social, a self-managing band that has earned international acclaim, not only for their music, but also for their innovative approach to sustaining their music careers; they successfully invited their fans to become share-holders in their record label in order to retain their independence from ‘the majors’.

Nian Brindle: Manager of The Heartbreaks, Morecambe's rising stars and the biggest buzz band at this year's international music industry showcase in Manchester, In The City.  Years after signing a major recording deal himself, Nian is now applying his inside knowledge of the industry to create opportunities for The Heartbreaks at a time when industry observers argue that major labels are a thing of the past.

Anna Esslemont: Songwriter, singer and violinist with award-winning folk-trio Uiscedwr and founder of Yukka Records, Anna epitomises today’s DIY approach in a nutshell.  With no previous experience of the music industry but an un-erring belief in her own musical talent, Anna threw herself into the deep end and learned the ropes the hard way.  But Uiscedwr have just returned from touring Europe to promote their highly acclaimed third album, so she must be doing something right!
